Bruce Lee Forever Stamp – USPS Honors a Martial Arts Legend
The U.S. Postal Service has honored Bruce Lee with a commemorative Forever stamp, recognizing not only an action film icon, but a philosopher, teacher, and cultural bridge-builder whose influence continues worldwide.
Unveiled during a First-Day-of-Issue ceremony in Seattle’s historic Chinatown–International District, the stamp pays tribute to the city where Lee first taught martial arts and began shaping the philosophy that would later transform global culture.
This issue marks more than a collectible, it marks representation, resilience, and legacy.

Design Analysis: Movement Captured in Stillness
The stamp features a striking black-and-white egg tempera painting of Bruce Lee performing his iconic flying kick. The dynamic pose conveys motion, discipline, and explosive energy.
Behind him, a bold yellow brushstroke slices across the white background, a deliberate artistic reference to the famous tracksuit from his 1978 film Game of Death.
Artist Kam Mak studied Lee’s films extensively to capture not just likeness, but essence. Because available photographs did not show sufficient facial detail during the flying kick, USPS commissioned a martial artist to recreate the pose for reference photography.
The result feels kinetic, as if Lee is breaking through the stamp itself.
Minimal color. Maximum impact.
Why Bruce Lee Matters
Bruce Lee was not merely an action star.
He was:
-
A martial arts innovator (founder of Jeet Kune Do)
-
A student of philosophy at the University of Washington
-
A teacher who welcomed students of all backgrounds
-
A cultural connector between East and West
His daughter, Shannon Lee, described the stamp’s national recognition as profoundly meaningful:
“You really can’t underestimate the meaningfulness of representation and of being seen.”
In a time marked by division, Lee’s words resonate strongly:
“Under the sky, we’re all one family.”
That message now travels on envelopes across America.
Seattle: Where the Journey Began
The ceremony’s location was deeply symbolic.
Bruce Lee moved to Seattle in 1959 at age 18. It was here that he:
-
Taught his first martial arts classes
-
Developed his early training methods
-
Met his wife, Linda Emery
-
Began shaping his cultural and philosophical identity
He is buried in Seattle’s Lake View Cemetery, alongside his son Brandon Lee, a site visited by thousands each year.
