The Iconic 1939 Canal Zone Stamps
Issued the Day WWII Began: The Story Behind the 1939 Canal Zone Stamps
Stamp collectors with an eye for history and design continue to treasure the 1939 Canal Zone stamp set — a series of 16 striking postage stamps (Scott 120–135) issued on September 1, 1939, the very day World War II began.
This set is considered one of the most beautiful and historically significant issues from the Canal Zone, as it highlights scenes from both the construction and operation of the Panama Canal. With detailed illustrations and a wide range of denominations, it offers both visual appeal and thematic depth — a true gem for topical collectors.
Originally tipped in Linn’s Stamp News in the January 1, 2007 Stamp Market Tips column, the set has seen steady demand ever since. According to the Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps and Covers, the set in very fine grade and mint, never-hinged condition is currently valued at $162.75.
However, a complete set in fine to very fine grade, free of gum creases or other faults, is still considered a good buy around $130 — especially for those building a historical or topical collection focused on engineering, global commerce, or U.S. territories.
Why This Set Stands Out
Historical Context: Released the same day WWII erupted, these stamps reflect a world-changing moment.
Design & Themes: Scenes from the building and operation of the Panama Canal, an engineering marvel.
Collector Value: Scarcity in top-grade condition continues to drive interest.
Topical Interest: Ideal for collections focused on maritime history, civil engineering, or American overseas territories.
Tip for Collectors:
When shopping for this set, always verify condition carefully. Look for mint, never-hinged examples with no gum issues, and aim for very fine centering when possible; those are increasingly rare and command top value.
More than just postage, the 1939 Canal Zone set captures a moment in history and engineering that still resonates with collectors worldwide. Whether you’re new to stamp collecting or a seasoned philatelist, this set is a meaningful and visually rewarding addition to any collection.
